Don’t expect to buy Google’s original Home speaker straight from the source. Google’s smart speaker lineup is currently comprised of four devices, with the latest being the Nest Mini from October 2019. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a standalone smart speaker that has Google Assistant built right in, either. Heck, the Nest Mini is Google's own answer for a cheaper alternative that doesn't suck, and you'll like it every bit as much as you would its older and more expensive cousin.
The original Google Home model is a cylindrical speaker that is 5.62 inches tall and 3.79 inches in diameter. The top surface of the device features colored status LEDs, and features capacitive touch controls to start and stop music, and adjust volume. A mute button is located on the back of the device, which disables the microphones. The main issue with the Google Home has little to do with the Home itself. The smart speaker field is now loaded with great options, and all of the good things I've said about the Home in this review also apply to the affordable $50 Google Home Mini and the booming $400 Google Home Max. For $130, the Home more than earns its keep -- and it keeps getting better. It's well worth your consideration, especially if you're invested in Android, Chromecast or any of the Home's compatible smart home platforms. You also don't have to worry about it getting outdated, as all of the many features Google's added to the Home since its launch have been pushed to its existing devices.
Meanwhile, the bottom was a “Base” that magnetically attached and could be swapped out. Available in fabric or metal, it was a nifty way to customize your Google Home, though the concept never really took off. If it's just a speaker you're after, one that can stream tunes and podcasts, answer questions, control other smart gear and so on, this is pretty hard to beat. The experience is clearly what Google wants to use going forward, but it pales in comparison to what the Google Nest built up over several years. Again, you need either a Chromecast streamer or a TV with Chromecast built-in to make any of this work. If you have that, the Home actually makes voice-controlled TV doable. Search for a recipe on your phone, and you can send any of 5 million different options to the Home.
